This week, Year 5 have been fully immersed in the fascinating world of the Grimm Brothers. As part of our English learning, we have been studying Grimm Tales for Young and Old by Philip Pullman and exploring the origins of some of our favourite childhood stories – with plenty of surprises along the way!

We have read the Grimm versions of well-known tales such as Little Red Riding Hood, as well as discovering less familiar stories, including Faithful Johannes. Through our reading, we have explored the key features of traditional tales, identifying common themes such as spells and enchantments, warnings and challenges, and the often gruesome or unexpected consequences faced by characters.

The children have enjoyed comparing different stories and discussing why these tales have remained popular for generations. They have shown great enthusiasm and insight as they analysed the structure, characters and moral messages within each tale. Take a look at some of the comic strips we have made based on the Grimm Brother's version of a few tales.

Next week, we will be drawing on everything we have learned to write our own traditional tales in the style of the Grimm Brothers, using the features and techniques we have explored throughout the unit. We are looking forward to seeing the children's creativity shine!
